Benni’s Ripple Effect

Benni’s Ripple Effect is a story of healing, connection and a promise to carry forward the difference one dog made. It honours Benni and my mum, and invites us all to consider how one relationship can change a life and touch another.

Where the Ripple Began

Sometimes a ripple begins before we even realise it.

Benni’s Ripple Effect really began with my beautiful mum.

When career-ending PTSD changed my life and I was struggling to find a way forward, Mum suggested I get a dog. Without her, Benni and I may never have met.

Benni changed my life. She became my assistance dog, my companion and, in so many ways, my greatest teacher. She didn’t fix me. She stayed beside me while I found my way back.

Through Benni, I began to understand something that would eventually shape both my life and my work: the extraordinary importance of safety in relationship. She taught me about trust, connection, communication and what can become possible when another being feels safe enough to simply be.

The Letter

But Benni’s Ripple Effect did not end with what she gave me.

After Mum died, I found a letter she had left for me. In it, she asked me to carry forward — to propagate — the healing impact that animals had brought into our lives.

That became a promise.

The books and so much of the work that followed grew from that promise. Sharing what Benni taught me became a way of honouring Mum, honouring Benni, and passing something forward that had profoundly changed my own life.

And that is what Benni’s Ripple Effect really means.

One Relationship Can Change a Life

We don’t have to change the whole world to make a difference. Sometimes we change one relationship. We help one person feel safer, seen or supported. We understand our dog differently. We choose greater patience instead of frustration, curiosity instead of judgement, or compassion instead of simply reacting to the behaviour in front of us.

And what happens next matters.

Perhaps the way you relate to your dog causes someone else to see their own dog differently. Perhaps something you learn is shared with a friend. Perhaps the way you model kindness, respect and understanding influences how another person treats an animal — or another human being. Perhaps someone who has been helped chooses, in their own way, to help somebody else.

That is the ripple.

One relationship can change a life. And one changed life can touch another.

Benni changed my life. She helped me to heal. Mum asked me to carry that healing forward. Benni’s Ripple Effect is my way of keeping that promise — and an invitation for each of us to consider what difference our own ripple might make.

Read our story. Share your story. Create your ripple. And let the ripple continue.
